Parish Religious Education Program Overview

Faith Formation Opportunities

The Parish Religious Education Program offers a comprehensive range of faith formation experiences for children, youth, and adults within the parish community. Central to the program are core offerings that provide preparation for important sacraments, including First Reconciliation, First Communion, and Confirmation. These sacramental preparations are complemented by ongoing, grade-level religious education designed to nurture spiritual growth throughout the year.

Family and Community Engagement

In addition to regular classes, the program incorporates family faith events, seasonal retreats, and special sessions, all aimed at fostering deeper spiritual connections among parish members. These opportunities support both individual and collective growth in faith.

Specialized Programs

The Parish Religious Education Program includes several specialized components to meet diverse needs. The Rite of Christian Initiation for Children (RCIC) guides young people who have not yet received certain sacraments, providing a tailored approach to their faith journey. The Family Foundation program is designed to reinforce faith at home through parent and child activities, encouraging families to grow together spiritually.

Adult and Youth Pathways

For adults, the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) offers a structured pathway for those seeking to enter the Catholic Church or to complete their sacraments. The Youth Ministry component delivers ongoing opportunities for adolescents, combining spiritual, social, and service-oriented activities. This aspect of the program encourages active engagement in parish life and fosters the personal faith development of young people. For specific RCIA information, please email Roger Cruz

Pax Dei

Overview

Pax Dei centers its mission around Jesus Christ in the Eucharist, with a deep reverence for His Church and the Communion of Saints. While intended for all ages, its aim is particularly to uplift young men and women through activities in both liturgical and secular settings. Outside Church activities, it strives to act as a bridge or “on-ramp” for those who may have disaffiliated from the Church or have not previously received formal religious formation.

Weekly Eucharistic Adoration

The Pax Dei Holy Hour is hosted at Our Lady of Mercy every Friday at 6:00 PM. This consistent opportunity for prayer and reverence, an oasis in the midst of so many tasks and distractions, is an invitation to everyone for a deeper relationship with our Lord Jesus Christ. In partnership with the Allentown Diocese Commission for Young Adult Ministry, an Adoration & Benediction booklet with sheet music in English, Spanish, and Latin was introduced in September, 2025. The booklet is dedicated to Bishop Alfred Schlert, and a unique copy was presented to him at a diocesan speaking event for young adults. Our Lady of Mercy and the Lafayette College Newman Association have been the first to adopt these booklets, and will be featured in the 2026 diocesan calendar for young adult events.

Key Initiatives Overview

  • Radical dependence on God’s providence for resources and growth. Donations are not accepted and all materials given are free gifts.
  • An ongoing project to present unique art, literature, and opportunities for participation via the Pax Dei website.
  • These materials are also presented as physical copies on rare occasions, and efforts are being made to increase availability.
  • Cooperating directly with the Newman Catholic Association and the Allentown Diocese Commission for Young Adult Ministry.
  • Building connections with other organizations, such as the Association of Marian Helpers, Knights of Columbus, and Joannes Press.
  • Calling everyone to strive for sanctity and grow in devotion through prayer and action.

Pro-Life Ministry

Mission Statement

The Pro-Life Ministry is dedicated to upholding and promoting the dignity and sanctity of all human life, from conception to natural death. Recognizing that God’s gift of human life is increasingly threatened in today’s world, our ministry seeks to raise awareness among parishioners about the value of every human life.

Purpose and Activities

Our primary purpose is to inform our fellow parishioners about life-affirming events and activities that celebrate the gift of life as bestowed by God. We strive to educate and inspire our community to honor and protect every stage of life.

The ministry is composed of members from Our Lady of Mercy and St. Anthony of Padua parishes. We meet regularly on the third Tuesday of each month from 7:00 to 8:00 PM, except during the summer months of June through August.

Our activities include providing complimentary life-respecting and educational materials, which are available in the rear of the church and at special events such as Festa-Fiesta. Through these efforts, we aim to foster a culture of respect for life within our parishes and the wider community.
