OCIC – Order of Catholic Initiation for Children
What is OCIC?
The Order of Catholic Initiation for Children (OCIC) is the process through which children age 7 and older prepare to become members of the Catholic Church.
The process is similar to the adult journey known as the Order of Catholic Initiation of Adults but is designed specifically for children.
Who Should Participate?
OCIC is for children who:
- Are age 7 or older
- Have not been baptized, or
- Were baptized in another Christian denomination
What Children Experience
Children journey through:
- Learning about Jesus and the Catholic faith
- Prayer and scripture
- Participation through parish life
- Special liturgical rites
The process helps them gradually grow in faith and understanding.
Sacramental of Initiation
Children in OCIC typically receive the Sacraments of Initiation together:
- Baptism (if not yet baptized)
- Confirmation
- Eucharist
These are often celebrated during Easter season, especially at the Easter Vigil.
Parent Involvement
Parents play an important role in supporting their child throughout this journey of faith and are encouraged to participate in formation opportunities.
